How Many Java Engineers are there in the UK?

Here’s a summary of what available data shows for the UK regarding people working as Java engineers, job-advertising for Java roles, and (where available) how many “new” Java engineers might be qualifying. Important caveats: data is limited and doesn’t always map cleanly to “new qualifications”, so treat these as indicative rather than exact.

✅ What the data shows

  1. Active job adverts for Java / Java engineer roles

    • According to Agency Partners’ UK “Software Java Engineer job market” report, there were ~ 5,000 job openings in the UK for Software Java Engineer roles in a recent period. Agency Partners

    • On the job site Reed there were 542 live “Java Engineer” jobs (current snapshot). Reed

    • On the job site Joblist there were ~ 6,948 Java opportunities in London alone. joblist.com

    • On the job site Reed for “Java Software Engineer” there were ~ 565 jobs. Reed

    • On the job site WeAreDevelopers, for “Java” jobs in the UK there was ~ 2,372 open jobs. WeAreDevelopers

    • Summary: job-advertising numbers vary considerably depending on site, role definition (Java Engineer vs Java Developer vs Java Software Engineer), region, and timing.

  1. How many people work as Java engineers (or Java-skilled professionals)

    • A 2021 LinkedIn “Talent Insights” snapshot for London: ~ 14,472 professionals in London skilled in Java. Morson Edge

    • There is no clear comprehensive UK-wide figure in the data found for “all Java engineers”.

    • One UK government table shows “Java developers” entry: 15,000 (in a broader category of “Professionals in IT and engineering”) for a particular data extract. GOV.UK

    • So we might infer the pool of Java-skilled engineers in the UK is at least in the tens of thousands, likely substantially more when all regions/levels included.

  2. How many qualify as “new” Java engineers annually

    • I did not find publicly reported UK data that shows how many people newly qualify as Java engineers in a year (e.g., graduates entering Java roles, certifications, etc).

    • Without that direct data, we can’t reliably give a number for “newly qualifying” Java engineers per annum in the UK.

⚠️ Key caveats & limitations

  • “Java engineer”, “Java developer”, “Java software engineer” are not strictly defined and different data sources treat them differently.

  • Job-advertising data is snapshot-based, and may count duplicate postings, repostings, remote roles, roles open for multiple weeks, etc.

  • The “pool size” of professionals is based on limited regional data (like London) or partial administrative sources and may under-count or over-count (depending on criteria).

  • The “newly qualified” metric is missing; I found no credible source giving an annual number of new entrants that identify as Java engineers.

  • The job market is fluid — numbers change often, especially in tech, and may be impacted by region, seniority, remote vs on-site, contract vs permanent.

📋 My best estimates and what we can say

  • Job adverts: On the order of several thousand Java-engineer-type vacancies in the UK at any given time (e.g., 2,000-6,000 depending on search criteria).

  • Workforce: The number of Java-skilled professionals in the UK is likely in the tens of thousands, e.g., >10,000 in London alone, and likely many more across the UK.

  • New entrants: No reliable figure found for annual new Java engineers.
